Quotes

Turn a message into a quote card members can restyle.

Configure Quotes in the dashboard →

Overview#

Quotes turns something a member actually said into a card worth keeping. Reply to their message with .quote and Iris renders their avatar across one half of the image, their words across the other, their name underneath and your watermark in the corner.

The card arrives with an editing strip under it. The Design button steps through six card designs, four buttons toggle the photo treatment, the side the text sits on and bold, fifty-six typefaces and sixty-three colour schemes sit in two paged dropdowns, and the New button cycles the background. Every press re-renders the same message, so a quote is styled in place rather than posted five times over.

The strip is temporary on purpose. When the edit window closes the buttons come off and the finished card is left standing on its own, which is also the moment autopost forwards it - so a highlights channel only ever receives the version its author settled on.

Setup#

  1. Open the dashboard and go to Community > Quotes, then turn the module on.

  2. Set the starting look under Card style, watching the live preview.

  3. Decide what goes under the quote in Attribution and watermark.

  4. Limit who may quote, and where, under Who can quote, and where if you need to.

  5. Point Autopost at a highlights channel if you want finished cards collected somewhere, then save.

  6. Use Post sample to see a real card land in a channel.

The editing strip#

SettingTypeDefaultWhat it does
DesignButtonClassic splitSteps through the card designs: classic split, photo card, full photo, portrait circle, square stack and minimal. The font, colours and background carry over between them.
MonoButtonOnBlack and white photo, or full colour.
TintButtonOffWashes the colour scheme over the photo as well as behind the text.
FlipButtonOffMoves the quote to the other side of the card. The watermark follows it.
BoldButtonOffThickens the quote text.
NewButton-Steps through the background treatments: avatar, blurred, duotone, close crop, no photo, then any custom images you added.
FontDropdownM PLUS Rounded 1cFifty-six bundled typefaces, from Playfair Display to Press Start 2P. The menu pages when it runs out of room.
Colour schemeDropdownBlack/WhiteSixty-three schemes, each with its own text colours, paged the same way as the fonts.
Remove my quoteButton-Deletes the card and every forwarded copy of it.

Colour schemes#

Sixty-three schemes is more than anyone is going to step through a dropdown one page at a time, so here they all are on the same card. Search by name, narrow to the dark or the light ones, and click any card to enlarge it and step through the rest with the arrow keys.

Loading colour schemes...

The same quote in every colour scheme Iris ships.

Commands#

  • .quote Replying to a message, turn it into a quote card. Anyone
  • /quote <message> Same thing from the slash command, given a message link or ID. Anyone

Permissions#

PermissionWhy Iris needs it
View ChannelsReads the channel the command was used in.
Send MessagesPosts the card, and any forwarded copies.
Attach FilesThe card is a PNG attachment.
Read Message HistoryFetches the message being quoted.
Manage MessagesOnly to delete the .quote command message, when that is turned on.

Tips and gotchas#

Nothing happens when I run the command.

Check the module is on, that the channel is not ignored, and that you replied to a message or passed a link. Iris also needs Attach Files in that channel.

The buttons stopped working.

The edit window closed. That is the end of editing for that card; make a new one if you want a different look.

The text came out in a different font than I picked.

A few of the bundled display faces only carry Latin characters. When a quote needs glyphs they do not have, Iris renders the whole card in the default face rather than filling it with empty boxes.

Someone deleted the original message. Is the card gone?

No. The card is an image Iris rendered at the time, and it stays where it was posted. The quoted member, whoever made it, and anyone with Manage Messages can remove it with the button while the edit window is open.

Can I quote a message from another channel?

Yes, with the slash command and the message link, as long as the message is in this server.
